Back-to-school time is expensive, not that we need to tell you that. From books to uniforms and everything else in between, you can often end up spending a fair amount, much to your horror.

However, there are a few things you can do to keep the cost a little lower, without having to send your child to class wearing jumpers and cardigans riddled with holes.

1. Don’t buy for the sake of it

Just because it's back to school time doesn't mean you have to buy new bags, stationary, lunch boxes and drink bottles. Only buy what you NEED and check everything with your child will will insist the need new everything.

2. Write a list and stick to it

Arm yourself with a list and you won't stray off course when out shopping. Bring a pen and tick things off as you buy them, and avoid going to places that will make you feel tempted - 'in and out' that should be your motto!

3. Mend holes in uniforms

Invest in a good proper sewing kit and your’ll be able to save yourself a fortune on uniform expenses. Obviously if their uniform is too small you’ll have to look further afield (well, unless you are a dab hand at alterations...) but aks family members before you head ot the uniform shop, especially if you have to buy crested items.

4. Check shoes BEFORE you buy new ones

Does your little one need new shoes every single September? Yes, if they are tend to have a growth spurt in the summer; no if they are still the same size as June. However, you should check they don't have loads of holes or anything like that...

5. Scan supermarkets for bargain

Even if your school has a crested uniform, you can pick up white T-shirts, socks and even plain shirts in your local supermarket for a fraction of the price of a uniform shop. Have a look at least, you might be pleasantly surprised.

6. Skip the hair cuts

Unless your child is looking like they spent the summer living in a forest, save yourself a few bob by skipping their annual back-to-school haircuts, for a few months at least. Why not try out a few hairstyles and see how long you can get away with it!
