We all know that the arrival of a baby can signal multiple changes in the lives of its loving parents, and it seems esteemed actor Benedict Cumberbatch is no exception.

The Sherlock star, who welcomed a baby son into the life he shares with wife Sophie Hunter last June, has revealed that baby Christopher has had a significant effect on his approach to acting.

Speaking to Melvyn Bragg on The South Bank Show recently, the 39-year-old Londoner explained that his son's arrival has caused a shift in his understanding of certain roles.

Once under the impression that 'you had to be childless to be a Hamlet', the highly-acclaimed actor has now undergone a change of heart.

Elaborating on his thought process, Benedict explained: "I thought that it may be a difficult ingredient to play with but it's miraculous – as I'm sure you know being a dad – that your thinking about how you were parented shoots up as well."

In addition to adding a certain element to his understanding of the Shakespearean play, Benedict reveals that Christopher has also had an impact on the emphasis he places on his craft.

Refusing to agonise over performances and reviews, Benedict, whose spokesperson announced he was due to become a dad last January, explains:"I drop it all very, very quickly because I have to eat and sleep. That's honestly the truth. And get home, to a newborn."

Benedict and Sophie tied the knot in the 12th century Church of St. Peter and St. Paul on the Isle of Wight on Valentine's Day this year.
