Bowen therapy eases pregnancy pains
Pregnancy is a magical time for any new mum, but it also can take its toll on a woman’s body. Back pain, aching feet, morning sickness, bloating, and tiredness are all common side effects of carrying a baby. Gowri Motha, obstetrician and author of ‘The Gentle Birth Method’ believes that Bowen Therapy can help pregnant women with these problems.
Users of Bowen Therapy include celebrities such as Elle Macpherson and Sam Tayor-Wood, and it can be used for cases of back pain, nausea, pubic and pelvic pain, mastitis, temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) problems and anxiety. Motha has also found that Bowen can help with pelvic tilt, which can cause problems with the positioning of the foetus.
Bowen Therapy is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive complementary therapy. This therapy is said to trigger the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognises the problems and makes the changes needed. Using primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue. Your practitioner will locate precise points on the body, using right amount of pressure that the individual requires. There is no hard-tissue manipulation or force needed. The body is allowed to rest for a few minutes between each set of moves. This allows the information the body has received to be absorbed and initiates the healing process.
Bowen is generally a pleasant therapy, with sessions lasting 30-60 minutes, depending on the condition being treated and age of client.
For successful treatment, it is essential that you visit a legitimate, well trained practitioner. The Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA) is the largest UK professional association for qualified Bowen Therapists. Members of this association are qualified in Anatomy & Physiology and First Aid. They are also fully insured, abide by a strict code of conduct and ethics and are committed to a programme of continuing professional development.
