Every parent has their own way of raising and looking after their children, and one mum in the US has sparked debate this week after fighting back against a neglect charge levelled against her by child services.

Sonya Hendren’s story began when a neighbour spotted her four-year-old son, Tomahawk, playing alone in the playground of the family’s gated apartment complex. The neighbour proceeded to contact Child Protective Services (CPS) with a complaint over the scene.

The self-professed ‘free-range’ mum was then arrested for child endangerment and neglect, with the child being taken out of her care. Although the four-year-old was returned to Sonya, Child Protective Services are still monitoring her case.

Arguing that the playground in question was ‘120 feet’ away from her front door, Sonya has gone public with her story and is angrily protesting against the charges.

“We have a CPS case now, and every time he’s not in my visual sight we’re in violation…I breastfed for 28 months. I cloth-diapered and, you know, obviously avoided helicopter-parenting. I’m doing everything,” Sonya told a local news station.

We will keep you updated on Sonya’s case as more information emerges.

What are your thoughts on this story? Do you think Sonya deserved the charges being levelled against her?
