If you have ever been in a blackout you will know how scary and frustrating it is trying to find a torch or even candle to light the way.

While you can always use your phone as a light source, if the battery runs out then you really are in darkness.

While it doesn’t happen very often it is always best to be prepared, you know, just in case the kids get scared...

If you are creating your very own home survival kit, make sure you have these essentials in the bag at all times.

1. Torch

You should invest in a number of small ones for the children but have a big one for the whole family.

2. Batteries

Make sure you have enough AA and AAA batteries for all your torches and anything else that works on battery.

3. Candles and matches

Pop a few candles and matches in the kit bag as well – they are great at creating the illusion of warmth if it’s a little chilly outside.

4. Spare phone battery

Depending on the type of phone you have you may be able to pick up a spare battery that you can leave, fully charged, in your survival bag.

5. Toys

With the TV and internet down board games will be a great way to pass the time as a family.
