How can I handle my other children during the delivery?

The best way to handle other children during the delivery is to arrange for a trusted individual to be on call near your delivery date to care for the children. This could be a relative, reliable friend or a flexible babysitter. Whoever you choose, they need to be aware and ready any time of day or night. Your caregiver should understand that there is a possibility you could be in the hospital longer than a couple of days. Be certain that your children are familiar with their caregiver before the delivery so that they will be comfortable and not frightened.

When the doctor has told you it is time to go to the hospital, contact your designated caregiver. Be sure to ask the hospital beforehand about their policy regarding young siblings in the delivery room and maternity ward.

If you need to arrange for multiple caregivers, be certain everyone has your information beforehand. The father of your baby is a better contact than you, as you will be busy even after childbirth with resting and caring for your new baby. Some fathers don't want to miss a second of the experience, and others can come and go to give relief to your chosen caregiver, if necessary.

If you absolutely must bring your children to the delivery room, you will still need an adult caregiver to watch and care for them. You will be unable to do so during the delivery and will be too weak to do so afterwards.
