How can my husband help me during pregnancy?

Your partner may feel a little helpless during your pregnancy. You are going though all these changes and he might sometimes feel a bit useless. Although your partner can’t go through the morning sickness and back pain and weight gain for you, there are plenty of little things he can do to help keep mummy happy.

  • Read a pregnancy book. Once your partner knows all the different ways your body is changing, he will have a better understanding of how you are feeling…and what to do to make you feel better.
  • Do more things as a couple. Your social life is going to change dramatically so pregnancy is a great time for you and your partner to spend some extra time doing the things you love together. Things like going out for dinner, taking a trip away or even just going to see a movie will be much more difficult when you have a little baby so make sure the two of you spend plenty of quality time together.
  • Morning sickness is a common problem for women in their first trimester. A lot of women appreciate when their partner helps them through this unpleasant phase. Holding back her hair and rubbing her back is a nice way of supporting her through her first few weeks of pregnancy.
  • Pregnancy can take a lot out of you and after a long day at work the thought of doing housework or cooking can seem impossible. Your partner can take on some of your duties so you can rest – especially when you’re too big to be changing bed sheets and cleaning the toilet! And even if he isn’t a great cook, he can save you cooking by ordering a take away or taking you to dinner.
  • A little surprise or gift now and then is a nice way to keep mummy happy. She will no doubt have a big appetite so food will be much appreciated and there are lots of lovely products available for mums-to-be.
  • When you are in your third trimester you will be too big to go anywhere near your aching feet. Get your partner to give you a foot massage and put on some nice lotions for you. He could even do your toe nails!
These are just a few suggestions to get your husband started but you will no doubt think of a few hundred more things he can do to help you through your pregnancy.
