Children of all ages are now exposed to the world of social media through their home computers or even their own smartphones.

Instead of trying to prevent kids from sharing online, perhaps the answer is to create a safer, more regulated environment for them to do so.

A new app, based loosely on Instagram, is designed to be a safer way for kids to try out social media. The app, called Kuddle, was invented by Norweigan father Ole Vidar Hestaas, whose 7-year-old son was eager to try out Instagram, just like his older sister. After finding no photo-sharing apps he deemed suitable for a young child, Hestaas decided to create his own.

Children can register for the site under their parent’s email address, meaning mum or dad will be notified each time their little one uploads a picture or adds a new friend. Kids can write captions for each picture they share, and can even draw on their own pictures. And although friends can like or share each other’s snaps, no comments are allowed.

The app is definitely extremely security-conscious, but is it a good idea to allow young kids to use social media at all? What do you think?
