While you’d be forgiven for thinking that giving your child a tablet will be of benefit to them when it comes to being successful in the world of tech and science, it seems you’d be wrong.

In fact, according to research conducted by Dr Shane Bergin from UCD, reading actually has a more profound effect on learning than any device.

Highlighting how parents play a key role in helping their kids develop learning skills – many of which involve interaction and stories – Dr Bergin told the Irish Independent that parents who assume that because a child has a tablet they are learning about technology are mistaken.

"Young children copy what they see us doing - and in many cases, that is sitting in a room looking at a tablet or phone, even when there are other things happening in the same space," he said.

"It is normal that children will want to do the same thing as us. However, we are fostering a different learning experience, and one that is not as effective as the valuable information exchange that comes with reading."
