If your toddler was a good sleeper before, it can be frustrating when they suddenly start to play up come bedtime and simply won’t settle.

However, rather than spend the evenings worrying about putting your little one down, try to figure out if there are any underlying reasons.

They may not be tired

A toddler doesn’t need as much sleep as a baby so if they are still having naps during the day, they may not be tired come bedtime. If possible, try to cut down the number of sleeps they have during the day or the length of them so that come night time they are more tired.

A change in bedtime

If you have changed their normal bedtime schedule slightly they may still be trying to adjust to the change. Give them a few weeks to get used to the new time and they should soon settle down into the new routine.

They may be suffering from separation anxiety

While separation anxiety is more common in younger kids, if doesn’t mean that toddlers don’t experience it. This anxiety can cause your child to become fearful when left alone so sit with them for a bit and offer reassurance to help them feel at ease.

They are afraid of the dark

As your child becomes older, they become more aware of their surroundings and may be frightened of the dark. A simple nightlight may offer a solution to the situation.

They have been moved into a new bed

If your toddler has recently made the transition from cot to bed they may find the extra space uncomfortable or a little daunting. To make them feel at ease, a barrier in the side will give them the security of the cot.

Activity in the home

Whether you have a relative staying over or there’s a new baby in the house, there might be so much activity going on in the home that your little one simple feels like they are missing out.
