Doctors know that babies born to mums with diabetes are more likely to develop diabetes themselves, but it’s only recently, that they’ve connected low blood sugar problems with low levels of fatty acids.

A study has been carried out by the Lipidomics and Nutrition Research Centre at London Metropolitan University, and it found that during pregnancy, diabetic women have almost 40% less DHA, a fatty acid made from omega-3, than healthy expectant mums.

In the study they gave pregnant mums a daily capsule of Equazen eye q mumomega, a high-street supplement which contains a combination of omega-3 and omega-6. The blood tests showed that mums who had taken the capsules had 53% higher levels of DHA, than the mums who took the placebo.

Even more importantly, the babies born to these mums also had higher levels of DHA, which could help reduce the risk of them developing diabetes. Could this be the breakthrough diabetic mums have been waiting for?
