When it comes to setting your foundation on your face, absorbing excess oil and getting rid of shine, powder is your best friend. While there are a number of types on the market, loose and pressed powder are the most common, although many mums can struggle between choosing which one to use.

To help you make your choice a little easier, here we explain the difference between the two:

Loose powder
Loose powder is great for soaking up excess oil, keeping your make-up in place and ensuring your skin is shine-free. Available in various colours, it provides a long lasting, matte finish. Even if you aren’t wearing foundation, it can help get rid of any facial shine, although it won't hide blemishes. As it is loose, it doesn’t really clog pores and works on combination skin without becoming flaky. A translucent colour is great if you often go from one foundation colour to the next, depending on whether you are going to work or on a night out.

Compressed powder
The main difference between pressed and loose powder is the amount of coverage you can get from one. Unlike loose powder, if you have very oily skin, you can wear pressed powder alone without any foundation as it covers mild blemishes and provides a matte finish. It is lightweight and its form means you can carry it around without it falling out all over your bag. They often come with a sponge applicator but, if you can, swap it for a powder brush that you might have already.
