When it comes to buying items for your little one, baby carriers are normally pushed to the end of the list. However, they can actually be a really useful tool to have in a number of situations including when shopping, doing housework, travelling or even just to soothe your little one, especially if they have colic.

 

There are plenty of different types available, from wraps and slings to carriers and pouches, which can be a little daunting when you walk into the shop to pick one. So to help you out, we have compiled a list of things to consider when making your decision.

 

You baby’s weight

While their age should definitely be a consideration, their weight should also help to determine which type you go for. If you do have a heavy baby, try to choose a carrier that gives your back support so opt for one with thick, padded straps that go over your shoulder and around your back.

 

Your back

If you already suffer from a bad back, then a wrap might be the best way to go, as it distributes your baby’s weight more evenly across your shoulders and hips.

 

If you want to breastfeed in it

If you plan on breastfeeding your baby in the carrier, you should opt for a sling or wrap that will give your baby freedom to be nurse properly.  

 

Your baby’s development/age

Your baby’s development should also be a key player in your decision. Young infants who can’t hold their neck should not be placed in an upright carrier but rather one that has a slight incline to support their head and spine. As they grow and develop head and neck control, a carrier that they sit up in will mean they will be able to see everything around them.
