What should I know about abdominal pain during pregnancy?

With pregnancy comes a host of changes to a woman’s body that may make it difficult to determine the severity of abdominal pain. It is a common ailment with pregnant mothers and can be nothing or a sign of a more serious problem.

While some abdominal pain is to be expected, anytime there is pain along with bleeding, fever, vaginal discharge, nausea, vomiting, chills, or faintness then it is time to see your doctor. What are some of the conditions associated with severe abdominal pain during pregnancy?

Abdominal pain can be the result of an ectopic pregnancy. This happens when a fertilised eggs implants outside of the uterus, possibly in one of the fallopian tubes. This is potentially fatal and should be taken care of quickly.

Placental abruption is another severe condition when the placenta separates from the uterus before your baby’s birth. Preeclampsia is possible as well, a high blood pressure condition that can only be relieved by giving birth.

Two other potential causes of abdominal pain during pregnancy are going into labour prematurely and miscarriages. There are other possible causes including urinary tract or bladder infections, gallbladder diseases, and pancreatitis. If your stomach pain becomes too much of an issue, do not hesitate to consult with your doctor to eliminate the more severe possibilities.
