When it comes to giving our children sweets as treats, while most of us are aware of how bad sugar is, not too many really consider the effects of caffeine on our kids.

And while most of us would never consider giving our youngsters a cup of tea or coffee, few of us realise just how many products contain caffeine.

Where can it be found:

  • Iced tea
  • Most fizzy drinks
  • Sports drinks
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Diet fizzy drinks
  • Chocolate

Here are five reasons why you need to cut out or cut down your child’s caffeine consumption:

1. It affects their sleep

Most of us will have a cup of coffee to perk us up in the middle of the day, and it has the same effect on children. Caffeine makes us feel awake and when it comes to your child they will be hyper, struggle to fall asleep and be a lot more irritable.

2. It increases anxiety

Caffeine can enhance your child’s mood and, especially for kids who are already suffering from hyper-activity, it can really increase their anxiety.

3. Your child’s brain is more sensitive to the effects

Your youngster’s brain is more sensitive to the effects of caffeine and can make them feel nervous, anxious, hyperactive and worsen or create stomach problems.

4. Most caffeinated drinks are high in sugar

While you are concerned about the caffeine content, it is also important you remember that most caffeinated drinks are high in sugar which can create weight problems and even obesity in later life.

5. It causes them to lose more water

Caffeine can cause your child to become dehydrated as some kids use it to quench thirst. It is also a diuretic which causes them to urinate more.
