Our thoughts are with the friends and family of much-loved actor Ben Stiller today after it was announced the star's mother, Anne Meara, passed away this weekend.

85-year-old Anne was a well-known face in the acting industry and celebrated four Emmy nominations during her long and successful career, but the mum-of-two was probably best-known for her role in Sex and the City where she played Miranda's overbearing mother-in-law, Mary Brady.

Paying tribute to the actress, Anne's devastated family released a statement which read: "Anne's memory lives on in the hearts of daughter Amy, son Ben, her grandchildren, her extended family and friends, and the millions she entertained as an actress, writer and comedienne."

Tributes have poured in for Ben's mother since her death on Saturday, with numerous well-known faces taking to Twitter to express their sadness at her death.

Well-known comedienne Sarah Silverman posted a photo of herself with the legendary actress and wrote: "I had the honour of meeting Anne Meara a few times. It was a life highlight."

Similarly, her onscreen son on HBO's Sex and the City, David Eigenberg wrote: "I say goodnight to the amazing, ballsy and profoundly talented Anne Meara. I was privileged to be her TV son."

Ben, who is married to actress Christine Taylor, has been quick to thank the public for their support during this difficult time and took to Twitter to express his gratitude, writing: "Thank you so much for all the kind words about Anne. All of us in our family feel so lucky to have had her in our lives."

Dad-of-two, Ben, who was filming Zoolander 2 in Rome when he learned of his mum's passing, has flown home to be with his family at this devastating time.
