Former Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford has been fighting to get her kids back to the US after a judge ordered them to live with their father in Monaco.

Sadly, time and time again her pleas to have her children returned to her have fallen on deaf ears, and when she took matters into her own hands many couldn’t blame her.

However, the frightening reason Kelly didn’t want to send her two children - Helena and Hermes - back to their dad, Daniel Giersch, was because her son started saying he was “afraid”.

Talking to People magazine, the mum-of-two, who was granted custody of the children for five weeks over the summer, said: "They were totally great the entire time. We were painting, horseback riding. Then right when they knew they were going to go back, they got really panicky. My daughter was crying, my son started saying, 'Mommy, I'm afraid'."

Despite a court order in Monaco requiring Kelly to return her children to their father, the 46-year-old actress said she had to act quickly in case she never saw her kids again.

"If I put them on a plane, I realised I may never see them again. I sent an email to Daniel telling him where we were. I just needed a moment to figure out what to do," she told the publication.

Describing the summer as the “first five weeks straight that [she’s] had with [her] children in six years”, Kelly was understandably devastated when they left.

"This whole time, what I've had to do is take an overall situation that's so bizarre and try to keep my kids healthy. I have to keep knowing if I'm okay, they're going to be okay. I don't want them to be fearful. My children ask me all the time if I am still fighting for them .... I always tell them the day will never come when I say no," she heartbreakingly explained.

This story is heartbreaking for everyone involved.
