The United States celebrated National Adoption Day on Friday and one star, who was eager to shed light on the wonder of the process, published a heartfelt post which documented her own experience of adoption.
Actress Kristin Chenowith, best known for her roles on The West Wing and Pushing Daisies, laid bare her feelings on the process of adoption and revealed that being adopted a week after her birth 47 years ago was a blessing.
Giving an insight into the family life she enjoyed, she wrote: “Growing up, my parents explained my adoption by telling me, “We chose you.”
Reflecting on the impact those three words can have on a youngster, Kristin insisted: “It was a wonderful way to put it an adopted child. And I think it’s true. An adoption is a full-circle blessing.”
Offering words of encouragement to fellow adoptees who may not be as comfortable with their family dynamic as Kristin, the much-loved star wrote: ”I encourage other adoptees to remember what blessed lives we have.”
“We weren’t abandoned; we were chosen, we were given a chance,” she explains in a post which has been circulated across various social media platforms since its publication two days ago.
While paying tribute to the couple who adopted her almost 50 years ago, Kristin goes on to acknowledge her biological parents in the moving post.
“If anything, I would thank my birth mother for loving me enough to make such a huge sacrifice. It’s a great gift for me to be able to say: “I know that I came from love, and I know that I have love.”
Understandably, Kristin’s incredibly positive experience of adoption has heavily influenced her perspective, writing: “In fact, I’ve always felt this deep desire; that if I were to have a baby, I would adopt.”
Offering words of advice to anyone considering the adoption route, the star wrote: “Remember that it’s a gift you’re getting and it comes with just as much responsibility as if you had your child biologically.”
“On top of that, it’s a beautiful blessing that you were chosen to take care of this child and become his or her parent.”
