Former EastEnders star Rita Simons has opened up about how Barbara Windsor is coping since her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

The actress revealed her former co-star is coping with life despite the horrid disease. She said she is being as positive as possible.

She told The Mirror: “Just because she’s got this terrible disease doesn’t mean she’s locked up in her flat all the time. She still has a laugh – she just has to factor this in as part of her life. She’s been having some really good days.”

She praised Barbara’s husband Scott who has been her rock since day one: “She’s got Scott who is amazing. That is commitment. Without Scott, Barbara would be lost. He’s the most wonderful husband to her.”

Scott confirmed the devastating news back in April. He told The Sun his wife had been diagnosed in April 2014.

He revealed the heartbreaking moment the actress found out about her diagnosis. “When the doctor told us, she began crying then held it back, stretched her hand out to me and mouthed, “I’m so sorry.”

“Since her 80th birthday last August, a definite continual confusion has set in, so it’s becoming a lot more difficult for us to hide. I can’t protect her any longer.”

He continued: “I'm doing this because I want us to be able to go out and, if something isn't quite right, it will be okay because people will now know that she has Alzheimer's and will accept it for what it is."

"I hope speaking out will help other families dealing with loved ones who have this cruel disease. Secondly, I want the public to know because they are naturally very drawn to Barbara and she loves talking to them," Scott added.
