Twitter went into overdrive earlier today when members of the public rushed to condemn Piers Morgan's supposed hypocrisy in the wake of Cilla Black's tragic passing.

And it seems Katie Hopkins has now landed herself in hot water after making an incredibly ill-advised comment following the outpouring of emotion exhibited following the death of the former Blind Date host.

Taking aim at the celebrities who used their Twitter pages to express their regret and sympathy, Katie suggested their messages were, perhaps, a little insincere.

The mum-of-three commented on the tributes paid to the late Cilla, writing: "If there are any celebrities who haven’t yet tweeted their sadness over Cilla, please report to Sincerity Services immediately"

The columnist finished her post by hashtagging the phrase 'Rush to gush."

Unsurprisingly, the controversial figure was the subject of much criticism following the questionable tweet, with one follower writing: "That’s too far Katie! She had lots of friends who were celebrities. It’s a shame you don’t have ANY friends isn’t it." (sic)

Defending her decision to remark on the tributes, Katie explained: "I understand people love Cilla. But the race to proclaim this on Twitter is a curious thing."

Quick to point out the ironic nature of her remarks, another Twitter user wrote: "And your race to tweet disrespect is a curious thing to most people but that doesn’t stop you does it."

We wonder if Katie will retract her remarks.
