Liam Neeson's son Micheál is touchingly paying tribute to his late mother Natasha Richardson.

It's hard to believe it's been almost 10 years since the actress tragically and suddenly passed away and, in what is a truly moving way to honour his mother on her anniversary, he has decided to officially take her surname. Her death, so sudden and tragic as it was, sent shock waves around the world.

His grandmother, actress and Atonement star Vanessa Redgrave confirmed her grandson had made the name change and changed his surname to Richardson.

His mother, actress and Tony Award winner heartbreakingly passed away in 2009 after suffering a head injury during a ski trip in Canada. "He's taken, officially, the name of his mother. He's Micheál Richardson, not Micheál Neeson," Natasha's mother, Vanessa Redgrave, said of the change.

She explained that it wasn't done for any other reason, except for him wanting to remain close to his mother.

"That wasn't because he wanted to avoid his father's fame, which is enormous. He wanted to hold his mother close to him — because she was a remarkable actress. Absolutely remarkable."

Micheál, who also has a younger brother Daniel, was only 13-years-old when his mum passed away, and in 2015, he opened up about the loss, saying it was "devastating."

"But in my mind, subconsciously, I either pushed it out or stored it deep inside," he told the Sunday Times at the time. "And so, within the next week I was like, 'OK, on with my life.'"

He said that he later moved to New York and was "partying a lot, looking for self-gratification. I wanted to be the man, doing these drugs."

"Everybody said, 'This kid has lost his mum, that's where the problem comes from.' And I was, like, ‘No it isn't, I just like to party,'" he went on to tell the outlet. "But looking back, I realize it was a delayed reaction."
