Prince William and Kate Middleton are celebrating a special day

November 16 2010 was the day that Prince William and Kate Middleton officially announced their engagement to the world, and we have adoringly watched them grow their beautiful family ever since.

Clarence House released the statement which read:

"Prince William and Miss Middleton became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya. Prince William has informed the Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father."

William and Kate attended a photography session at James's Palace, with Kate showing off her stunning blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring which Prince Charles gave to Princess Diana in 1981.

While speaking about the significance of the ring, William stated:

"It's very special, as Kate is very special. It's my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement."

The announcement of their royal engagement was also the start of the Kate Effect - the uncanny ability for anything the Duchess wears to immediately sell out of the shops.

Kate's royal blue wrap dress by Issa sold out of stores within hours. The UK-based designer struggled to keep up with the new demand for her clothing.

The couple's official engagement photos were taken by Princess Diana's friend, and globally renowned photographer Mario Testino.

The happy couple originally met at school, attending St. Andrews where they studied together eight years before their engagement. After being quizzed in their first interview on the location of the proposal, William revealed that he proposed to Kate during a trip to Kenya.

William explained that he had been planning the proposal for quite some time, and had even carried his mother's ring in his bag for three weeks before eventually getting down on one knee.

Kate referred to the moment as "very romantic," before saying that it came as a"total shock". As we all likely know, they wedded on 29 April 2011 in a fairytale ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

And the rest is history; now titled the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will and Kate have three gorgeous children.

Prince George was their first child, born in 2013. Their daughter Princess Charlotte came next in 2015 and young Prince Louis arrived in April.
