Camping is becoming a popular holiday option for many families in Ireland. Kids love the excitement of camping and many sites now have children’s play areas, as well as security and all the mod-cons. Camping is also a great way of saving some money. From as little as €20 per night, people have the choice of 90 sites nationwide.

If it’s your first time camping, you might not be familiar with what you need to look for when planning your stay and or what you need to bring. Here are some useful tips to keep in mind when booking a family camping holiday, whether you’re staying in a caravan or tent.
  1. If it’s your first time camping, you may not be sure what size caravan or tent is appropriate. As a general rule, whether it’s a tent or caravan, get something a little bigger than what you think you need.
  2. If you are renting a caravan check if towels and linens are provided. Also find out if there are laundry facilities on site.
  3. Check if there is a shop or restaurant on site. If there is, bear in mind that it will probably be cheaper to buy your food off site so find out where the nearest supermarket is.
  4. Get to know your camping neighbours. You don’t know when you might need them. Also the best entertainment for kids is always other kids. Introducing yourself to the neighbours could be a great way to keep the kids entertained for the holiday.
  5. Don’t forget, if you are holidaying in Ireland there is likely to be rain so make sure there are activities on hand should you have to spend the day indoors.
  6. Some sites will advertise kid’s activities but make sure these are available the time you are visiting the site as often these activities are only available in July and August.
  7. If booking a mobile home, check how many bedrooms (rather than bed spaces) are available. If you are renting a tent, there are tents available that have separate rooms with zipped partitions.
  8. If you’re going camping for the first time, practice pitching your tent at home before heading off. If you don’t get the opportunity to practice, follow the instructions carefully and don’t be afraid to ask fellow campers for a helping hand.
  9. Pack sensibly – Ireland can experience all seasons in one day even during the summer so pack accordingly. Make sure to bring something warm as well as the suncream and shorts.
  10. Compile a checklist – apart from the obvious things like sleeping bags, gas, airbeds, there are some other essentials that will make life a little easier – spare tent pegs, mallet, torch, wipes, refuse sacks, insect repellant, black insulation tape (for quick repairs) and, of course, a bottle opener for the wine.
