Every now and then something is billed as the new ‘wonderfood’ which basically promises to change our life. We had goji berries, spirulina and kale, amongst others – and now it’s the turn of the relatively little known maca powder to take centre stage.

So what is the stuff? And better still, what does it do? And even better still does it taste minging?

Well, maca is actually a root, belonging to the radish family (great laugh that lot – brilliant parties) but generally comes in powder form. It’s grown in the mountains of Peru and is also known as ‘Peruvian Ginseng’.

It’s long been valued for its fantastic properties but has only become well-known worldwide in recent years – we're guessing it might be something to do with Instagram!

1. It’s an aphrodisiac

Oo-er! The minerals in the root, such as iodine and zinc, have been shown to balance sex hormones. Studies have even shown that maca helps with the sexual-dysfunction that follows taking anti-depressants.

2. It’s a superfood

Maca has everything but the kitchen sink. It has a high vegetable protein content, fatty acids, essential minerals like selenium (great for skin, hair and nails) magnesium (brilliant for sleep problems, anxiety and brain function), calcium and iron.

3. It helps with the menopause

Maca balances hormones and extensive research has proven that women taking the root experienced significant relief from hot flashes, night sweats and depression.

4. It supports mood

The omega-3 fatty-acids found in the root are essential to support mood and overall brain function.

5. It gives us heaps of energy

Tired all the time? Groggy? Feeling like you’re not operating on your best? Well apparently maca can put a stop to all that. Studies have shown it improves athletic performance and significantly ups energy levels, naturally.

Okay, we’re convinced – but we’ve been burned in the past by the pond scum-like spirulina – is it gross?

No, it’s actually very mild and almost malty and buttery. It’ll taste great in cereal, smoothies – in fact you can chuck it into any meal for a super nutrition boost.

So will you be giving it a go? Or have you already? And if so, how are you finding it? We’d love to hear how it’s going for you!
