Caring for the environment starts at home. Not only will your child learn the invaluable lesson about conserving energy and saving water, but you will save money that can go towards a family day out.

Cut down on food waste
The best way to be environmentally-friendly is to cut down on the amount of food waste you create. Before you go shopping, plan your weekly meals so that you will only pick up what you actually need, therefore preventing buying food that will just go to waste.

Turn off appliances
When you leave a room make sure you turn off the lights or TV. When you are finished with appliances make sure you unplug them or turn the socket switch to off. Make sure you don’t leave your phone charger or laptop charger plugged in either. Remember, electronic appliances can use just as much energy in standby mode.

Change your light bulbs
Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs: they use less energy and last longer. They are expensive so don’t change all your bulbs at once, pick up a few every couple of weeks or months.

Open your curtains
Let the sun shine in through the windows. This will save you on both lighting and heating as the sun will brighten and warm your home naturally.

Fix leaks and insulate
Make sure your home is as insulated as possible including the water tank. Plug holes, seal draughts and fix leaky taps. Over time you will notice a drop in your bills.

Set your temperatures
Make sure your fridge and freezer are not working too hard. Set your fridge at 4°C and your freezer at about -18°C. Don’t continuously open and close the doors to avoid wasting energy.

Vegetable patch
If possible, set aside a little area in the garden for a vegetable patch. This will save money and is a great project for the whole family. If you don’t have a garden, a little herb pot or vegetable window planters would work just as well.

Turning your home green doesn’t take too much effort but it will go a long way in teaching your child about being environmentally friendly and save you money in the process.
