Ever wondered how to raise a child to be more creative? Creative people tend to solve complex problems and life situations with more ease than others, so it's a good thing to encourage. But sometimes it's hard to understand what the child’s interests are. Some may have a natural intelligence of writing and some may like dancing and music. No matter what the interest, you can guide your child towards his or her exploration of creativity. Still not sure? Don't worry, we're here to help you in the process, as we dive deeper and find out the ways to unleash your child’s creativity.
Do not bar the interests
A child’s interest can switch with time. One day your child might want to try instruments and the other day he or she might pick up a brush. You might become irritated at this but trust me this is a great part of a child's creativity.
Do you know that Einstein played violin whenever he wanted to relax? So, it is natural to have talents in different sectors. If your child loves to read books, then please do not hesitate to buy books. Just let them explore.
What about screens?
Technology nowadays has helped the learning process in a lot of ways. Kids watch YouTube videos and learn new stuff every day. But this has a downside too. Too much screen time hampers the creativity enhancement process. Send your child outdoors. Give him or her a bike. Remember the adventures you had during your childhood? Yeah, those times were great. Outdoor activities increase a child’s ability to connect with others. If you are afraid of giving your child a bike, then take him or her to the playground or park. Teach how to fly kites or something. Simply put send your child outside to play without the use of any screen.
Handle rapid waves of questions
Children are naturally very curious. They want to learn so many things. So, they bombard their parents with questions about almost everything. Some people get startled with these questions and fail to figure out what to do.
My suggestion is that you try to answer those questions. But do not answer all of those. In response to some questions, you can ask your child a question. Ask your child what does he or she think the answer is. What should it be? This will spark the curiosity in them. They will start to think about events and everything. But be careful and do not stop answering at all. Keep the balance.
Outdoor time
Take your child outdoor and do some outdoor activity. These activities can be from gardening to camping. Take long distant drives. Plan up routes together. You can rake your yard with your child. This will build the connection between you two. You can ask your child to coordinate the leaves on the basis of size and color. This will bring out their ability to solve problems. While gardening your child will learn more about the beauty of this planet. All these activities will let your child explore. This exploration will bring out the critical thinking ability of your child and they will learn to analyze and create.
Permission to enter their fantasy world?
Children tend to roam around their fantasy world. Many parents do not allow this. I remember my parents were quite opposite to the idea of my fantasy playing. It is a great thing if parents allow children to fantasy play.
Moreover, it would be more helpful to bring out their creativity if you ask them to allow you into their world. Let them teach you the ins and outs of their world. Participate with a happy face and with time give out different prompts to make it even more effective. This would make the family bond stronger and, in the process, will allow the child to be more and more creative.
Unleash the Picasso
If your child shows interest in painting, then do not hesitate. Start with giving them crayons, and give them enough space to show creativity. Or else say goodbye to your well-painted walls. Once they are a bit more interested you can give them airbrush painting kit for kids. This will allow them to unleash their colors. Praise them about their creations and gradually open the world of paintings to them.
Take your children to the museum with you. This will increase the family bond. Do not forget to check the painting materials regularly and refill the stock once it is depleted. Again, this is a request to all the moms and dads. Do try this or else your child will be like me after growing up. Will be able to appreciate paintings but will have a longing for not being able to paint.
Play music and dance
Music and dance bring out a great amount of creativity from a child. Music not only helps soothe the mind but also it allows a brain to develop. Encourage your child to ‘sing like birds’ and ‘dance like the leaves’.
Also, there is no need to buy actual musical instruments at first. There are many toy musical instruments and if you're really feeling creative, you can make your own instruments. Make a guitar with a cereal box while a bucket and spoons can be the drum set. If you see that your child is actually interested, then encourage them further.
Last but not least
There are many things outside of these that can bring out the creativity in a child. You can allow your child to cook if he or she seems interested (with supervision). Or offer the opportunity to read - don't forge anything, and start with something fun such as comics or illustrated books. If your child gets bored with other things, then he or she might find an interest in books.
Now all you have to do is go and have a great time with your child.
