In a world where cyberbullying, body image issues and peer pressure play such a major role in our children’s lives, it’s not surprising to learn that so many of them are living with low self-esteem.

According to a recent study carried out by The Sky Academy, almost a third of young people in the UK are suffering from cripplingly low self-esteem.

A total of 1,600 young people participated in the survey – which was supported by YouTube star Alfie Deyes – with the subjects being quizzed on their lives and the pressures that undermine their confidence.

Of those surveyed, only 60% of girls said that they felt confident, while 67% of the boys surveyed returned the same response.

With the issue of cyberbullying raised over and over again in the study, social media has been pinpointed as a major contributory factor to these concerning statistics.

One girl is reported to have commented: “We can communicate further than we did before…but then there’s disadvantages as well; we do have cyberbullying…they see a photo of someone and call them ugly.”

The study found that, overall, girls’ confidence is tied to how attractive or unattractive they feel (66%), compared to boys (46%).
