A frightening report reveals that nearly half of women say they suffer from poor health, with the majority admitting they are anxious, depressed, or in constant pain.

Findings from the NHS’s annual health survey of 8,000 adults were revealed a day after worrying figures of alcohol consumption among women over 65.

According to the Office for National Statistics, one in seven women of that age drink alcohol at least five days a week, which is a lot more than those under 40.

Experts are especially concerned with the levels of inactivity among women, especially since inactivity has previously been associated with depression, cancer, heart disease and in some cases, dementia.

Figures reveal that 25% of women are officially inactive – and do no more than half an hour of physical activity per week.

Senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Keeping active is one of the main ways we can all reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease. Physical activity also helps children grow up fit and healthy and protects their hearts into adulthood.”

“Being active doesn’t have to cost the earth and there are many activities the whole family can enjoy together, such as dancing, cycle rides or long walks,” she added.
