The Great British Bake Off is back on our screens and we are loving it - but is it set to change?

It's fair to say, Paul Hollywood has been very generous this season with his famous handshakes.

Although the bakers have been delighted to be offered the compliment, it seems the public aren't too keen on seeing so many contestants receiving that seal of approval for their bakes.

Taking to Twitter, they have aired their grievances about the Hollywood Handshake being dished up so much.

So much so, that Paul Hollywood had to defend his actions during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show.

"I've taken a bit of flack over [it]. The handshake came from when [bakes] looked very professional and they almost cross that line from being amateur to professional," he explained.

"Every year the standard has got better and better and better and this year has been phenomenal. Some of the flavours they are bringing out. Rahul's stuff has been incredible."

However, it might be a thing of the past as the celebrity chef added: "you will see it happen, the handshakes almost stop. Because what I've done is I've realised they are all moving up in standard so I've got to move my barrier up so that's exactly what I do, I raise the bar and then no one gets over the top of it."

On Twitter, Paul iterated just how impressive this year's standard has been.

Replying to a tweet, the 52-year-old said: "What you're forgetting which is crucial is the general standard of baking/bakers has risen year on year...this is reflected in any praise given."

Love or loathe the handshake, it seems it will be reverting back to being a rare luxury.

Tune in tonight and see the bakers attempt to take on pastry week.
