A UK mum who is in remission from breast cancer has written a children’s book so other mums with the illness can explain the disease to their children.

Katherine Simpson-Jacobs, 42, from Suffolk, was diagnosed with breast cancer when her daughters Anna and Sofie were just six and four years old.

And after finding her experiences explaining to her girls what was happening to her extremely difficult, she set about writing a book to help parents discuss the illness with their kids in a “safe and gentle way”.

She bravely penned the storybook ‘What We Did When Mummy Got Cancer’ when she was undergoing treatment.

“I just felt there was a really gap and I wanted to help other people,” she told the Daily Mail. “I came up with the story – it's like an apple that's gone bad and they seemed to accept that and understood it. I explained that the bruise needs to be cut out so the rest of the fruit doesn't go off.

“I wasn't one day contemplating a bowl of fruit! I just thought, “How can I explain that a part of me is going to be taken off?” And that's all I could think of. I guess my way of expressing myself is to write.”

The book is now available in print and online with all proceeds going towards local charity Cancer Campaign in Suffolk.

“I just want to get it into the hands of people who need it,” the amazing mum told the Daily Mail.  “I think it would work for anyone trying to explain the situation to young children. It will hopefully help get over the barrier of, "What on earth am I going to say to the kids?”
