While holidays are meant to be a relaxing time away from the stresses of everyday life, travelling can be hectic.

Being far away from home, and all the little ways you’re very used to, can be disorientating and a bit stressful.

Here are a few DIY tricks that might help ease travel tension, making leaving home a little bit easier.

1. DIY sleep spray: Sometimes falling asleep in a different bed can be frustrating, putting a weary cloud over your holiday. A simple DIY sleep spray can help you naturally drift off. Mix together two tablespoons of witch hazel, 10 drops of lavender essential oil, 10 drops of bergamot essential oil and 10 drops of cedarwood essential oil. Pour into a small spray bottle and spray on your pillow or on your wrists and temples for a good night’s sleep.

2. Wrinkle-release spray: It’s almost impossible to escape wrinkly clothes after packing, but this easy-to-make spray will fix that very problem. Mix together ¼ cup of water, ¼ vinegar, ¼ cup of fabric conditioner and pour into a spray bottle. Mix together the ingredients in a spray bottle, screw on the top, and shake to distribute. The vinegar and conditioner work together to help release wrinkles by softening the fabric, and the conditioner cancels out any vinegar smell.

3. Washcloth travel kit: Next time you're travelling, make this quick and easy washcloth travel kit. Pick up a washcloth, and a bit of washable ribbon to create this nifty carrier. Simply fold a washcloth in half lengthwise two inches from the top edge. This gives the travel kit enough room to hold your products so they don't fall out. Stitch up the sides and through the centre with a sewing machine or using a needle and thread. Create compartments by stitching sections to fit everything you need in the shower. Once finished, trim ends with a scissors. Attach at least a one foot length of washable ribbon to an edge of the washcloth and you're ready to fill the travel kit with your stuff. Simply roll up the washcloth, wrap the ribbon around, and tie. To keep the washable ribbon from fraying, coat the end with clear nail polish.

4. Single-serve coffee: The next time you're travelling, make and bring along your own single-serve coffee so you can enjoy your favourite blend no matter where you are. These are easy to put together and travel well, packed in a plastic zip-top bag. It's as simple as filling a coffee filter with two to three tablespoons of coffee grounds. You can even add a dash of cinnamon or drop of vanilla to flavour your coffee. Secure with a length of cotton string, and you're set for making coffee. Simply drop this single-serve coffee satchel in a mug, cover with hot water, let steep for a few minutes, then remove.

5. Breath freshener: Measure and add ¼ cup of warm water to a small bowl and then stir in ¼ teaspoon of honey, which naturally sweetens the breath spray. Drip in 10 drops of peppermint oil, before pouring into a small spray bottle.

6. All-in-one clothes washing bombs: There's no need to bring washing detergent, fabric softener, and stain remover: make these all-in-one washing bomb that are very compact, making them easy to pack when travelling.
What you'll need:
Small mixing bowl
Grater
1 1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup Fels-Naptha
2 tablespoons Epsom salts
3 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup vinegar
15-20 drops essential oil
Sheet pan
Parchment paper
Measuring spoons

What you'll need to do
- Grate the Fels-Naptha into the mixing bowl and add the washing soda and Epsom salts. Fels-Naptha is a washing bar soap that does a great job of attacking stains and cleaning your clothes. The boost of all-natural washing soda softens water while washing clothes. And the Epsom salts cut down on static cling and also soften fabrics once clothes hit the dryer.
- Now add the hydrogen peroxide and give things a stir. Hydrogen peroxide naturally whitens clothes and keeps your colours fresh. Stir in the vinegar, which busts through stains while leaving clothes soft. Then scent with several drops of your favourite essential oil.
- Once everything's incorporated, the mixture should resemble wet sand and clump together when pressed. Cover a sheet pan with parchment paper and then use a rounded 1 tablespoon measuring spoon to scoop up the mixture, press against the side of bowl, then tap out onto the pan. Finish with a quick spritz of equal parts vinegar and water. Let set for eight hours before using.

7. DIY Febreze
Sometimes hotel furniture doesn't smell so fresh, so bring a mini spray container filled with homemade Febreze to quickly refresh up the room, or freshen up your clothes after they've been folded in a suitcase for hours.
What you'll need:
Spray bottle
2 tablespoons fabric softener
2 tablespoons baking soda
3 cups hot water
Essential oils (optional)
What you'll need to do:
- Measure and add your favorite fabric softener to the spray bottle, using a funnel as needed. Then add the baking soda and fill the bottle with hot water.
- Screw the top onto the bottle, and shake the bottle until the baking soda is distributed. If you're feeling like amping up the scent, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, which also adds a bit of antibacterial properties to the spray.
- Spritz directly onto furniture or linens for instant refreshing. For best results, shake before each use.
