Do not hurt yourselves: Netflix issues warning over ‘Bird Box challenge’

There is a new Internet challenge doing the rounds on social media, thanks to Netflix’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi hit Bird Box.

The movie, starring Sandra Bullock, tells the tale of a mother bringing her two children on a deadly blindfolded journey through a dangerous world, in which a mysterious force causes people to commit suicide with a glance.

While searching for a safe place that hasnt been marred by the force, the trio navigate the world completely blind - and a challenge mimicking their experience has sprung up online.

The Bird Box challenge sees people videoing and photographing themselves performing tasks blindfolded - sometimes in dangerous situations.

Many videos show people injuring themselves by walking into walls, or falling over objects.

One appears to show a man attempting to drive a car on a busy motorway with his eyes covered. Another shows a person trying to cross a road blindfolded, as cars rush by.

Another shows a father and his two children navigating their home blindfolded. One child ends up smashing into an interior wall of the home, after being dragged along by the parent.

Netflix issued a warning on Twitter asking people not to take part in the Bird Box challenge.
