Brenda McLackland

Clinical Baby & Child Psychologist
Brenda is a Clinical Baby & Child Psychologist. She enjoyed her 25 years in the NHS, working with mums and dads to show them their babies' amazing abilities. Babies’ emotional development starts during pregnancy, and when parents understand this it is so much easier for them to bond with their baby once born.

Being a psychologist, Brenda is an expert in the emotional wellbeing of mums, dads, babies and children. Her passion is to arm parents with the knowledge they need to embrace and enjoy parenting. Emotional wellbeing is as important as physical wellbeing, and it is time to redress the balance. There is a lot of information out there about physical development, but not so much about emotional milestones; yet what parent does not want a confident, happy child?

Brenda runs Happy Baby workshops (click here for more information); these are informal interactive sessions to discuss with parents-to-be how babies are born social, connected and relationship-ready. She is also the author of a couple of ebooks (check them out through this linkwhich she has written to accompany her course. These are recommended reading for any parents interested in how to raise a happy baby.

Brenda admits that, before having her own children, her work with parents was ‘a bit textbook’. She moved away from home to study to be a Clinical Psychologist, and had two children soon afterwards. “I learned what it is like to bring up children with no family support,” she says. “Parents try their best, and need support and encouragement not criticism."

Most people need some time to adjust to being a parent, and Brenda is there to offer support to both parents. She likes to meet parents when they are expecting; then, that trusting relationship develops and means they feel comfortable bringing any problems to her, should they arise later. Brenda finds being a psychologist rewarding, but her other love is dance. She and her partner are in various stages of learning tango, rock-and-roll and cha-cha-cha!
