The makers of popular children’s character Miffy have come under fire for a “gross” sweatshirt which appears to promote dieting.

The jumper features Miffy sitting in front of a cake and is emblazoned with the slogan, “The diet starts tomorrow” – and while the top is marketed for adults, many think it’s inappropriate, and even damaging to young children.

An image of the sweater was posted to Miffy’s Twitter page as part of a competition, and has since received a barrage of complaints.

“A children’s character should not be associated with dieting, considering how susceptible young people are to negative body image,” tweeted one commenter.

“No no no,” added another, “Nobody who’s a size S should be dieting or implying they need to. And using a children’s character to promote this is sick.”

While another user made a very good point: “I don’t get it. Miffy’s a child and shouldn’t be thinking about dieting.”

Miffy books are aimed at children from age three, and in the series, the cute character is depicted as a baby to four years.

What do you think of the sweater? A damaging promotion of diet culture among kids? Or harmless fun? We would love to hear your opinion on this.
