Yams; not exactly something we'd ever consider for our dinner never mind dessert.

 

However, it seems like yam ice cream is now an actual thing, and people are loving it. 

 

 

But it's not a new thing; apparently the purple vegetable (known as ube) has been a staple in Philippine desserts for a long time now, but it is starting to catch on around the world.

And we have a feeling the purple colour - which is completely natural - has something to do with it.

 

It also contains plenty of vitamins, minerals, nutrients and antioxidants, and according to Time you can mash and blend it into any of your favorite desserts, including cakes and pies.

However, while it is definitely better for you than normal desserts, a purple yam mixed with sugar, milk and all sort of other tasty dessert ingredients is not something you want to be eating every day.
