It can be tempting to splash out on clothes and treats for yourself in the Christmas sales, but now's also the time to stock up on the more expensive items that will be essential once you welcome your new baby.
You'll no doubt be given clothes and toys as gifts, so why not take advantage of the discounted prices this week and buy a few of the more practical items that you'll need when your little one arrives?
Here are a few suggestions...
1. A buggy
This is by far one of the most pricey items you'll buy ahead of your baby's arrival, so make the most of the sales and save yourself some cash. Look for a buggy which will allow your newborn to lie flat or which has a carrycot that converts into the buggy's seat. Lying flat aids your little one's breathing and helps with spinal development in the early days.
2. A car seat
Another essential for getting around with your little one in tow. Ease of use is a key factor when choosing a car seat, so shop around for one that is light, secure and easy to install. A cover that can be removed and wiped down or machine washed is another advantage. When do you purchase a seat, practice installing it and removing it so that you're ready to go once your little one arrives.
3. A baby monitor
A great tool for giving you peace of mind as your baby sleeps. If a video monitor is something you're considering, now is a great time to buy one as they can be quite expensive at full price. Other great features to look out for include a prominent low-battery light so you'll always know if the batteries need changing, and a sound-activated light which will flash when your baby makes a noise, allowing you to stay aware of what's going on even if you are hoovering or have music playing.
4. A nursing bra
If you'll be breastfeeding your little one, a nursing bra with easy-open flaps will make feeding much simpler. Your current maternity bra might already have a feature like this so check before you buy a new one. If you're buying a nursing bra now with a few months of your pregnancy to go, be aware that your cup size may increase again after pregnancy once your milk comes in.
5. A cradle or bassinet
Another pricey item that you could easily save money on in the sales. Look for one that is well supported at the bottom with a wide base to prevent it falling over, and a mattress that fits snugly into it. Experts suggest avoiding cradles with motion or rocking features for very young babies, as your little one could roll against the side of the crib and become deprived of air. Cots are also suitable for newborns but some mums feel they are simply too big and that their little one would be cosier in a cradle - the choice is yours.
6. A nappy bag
A good quality nappy bag can sometimes be more expensive than you'd expect, so take advantage this week and buy a discounted one. Make sure the strap sits on your shoulder comfortably and that the fabric is durable and machine washable, with lots of space inside. Bags with outside pockets are great for storing extra items like nappy bags, soothers, toys and even your wallet and keys.
