Travelling can be expensive but even more so during the festive season when airfare goes up, traffic is hectic and there are a few delays that you have to deal with along the way. Thankfully with a little thought and preparation you can manage to keep your costs down.

Pack a lunch

Always bring a packed lunch. Whether you are travelling by car, boat or plane you will need to eat, and preparing it at home will help to keep costs down as you won’t need to stop to pick up something up.

Check your meal

If you are travelling by plane and you are going to be given a meal make sure you check to see what will be served. This way you can choose an alternative if you need it or bring something along just in case.

Avoid rush hour traffic

Try to avoid rush hour traffic that will only eat your petrol/ diesel. So avoid heading away on Christmas Eve if possible, go as early as you can and never go during rush hour.

Bring entertainment

Save your money by not buying magazines or toys for the journey, instead let your kids choose something that they already have at home and allow them to bring it along. Stop off in the library to stock up on books and avoid the magazine rack when you are getting fuel.

Give kids pocket money

Give your kids pocket money so that if they do want to pick up sweets or really want a particular magazine, they have their own money to get it with. And once it’s gone it's gone. This will mean you will be able to keep track of all spending and know that you aren’t blowing your budget.
