Heartbreakingly, in March the Icelandic actor announced the cancer had returned and it was terminal.

In a statement about his health, he said: "It's not until they tell you you're going to die soon that you realise how short life is.

"Time is the most valuable thing in life because it never comes back.

"And whether you spend it in the arms of a loved one or alone in a prison-cell, life is what you make of it. Dream big."

His wife paid tribute to her "beloved" Stefán yesterday on Facebook.

"Stefan's family wants to express their gratitude for the support and warmth received in recent years, and to express their deepest sympathy to the many friends and fans of Stefan Karl," she said.

In align to the actor's wishes, there won't be a funeral held, but "his earthly remains will be scattered in secrecy in a distant ocean".

LazyTown hit the silver screen in 2004 and aired until 2017.

It made a brief comeback between 2013 and 2014.

Lazytown was based on the adventures of Stephanie and her superhero friend Sportacus.

The duo came up with ideas on how to get the town's citizens active.

Robbie Rotten spent his time trying to foil their plans.

Tributes from fans to the actor have been pouring in across social media platforms.

Sending his family our deepest condolences.
