L’OCCITANE continues eco-conscious journey with launch of new recycled & recyclable packaging

Reducing Waste is a commitment at the core of L’OCCITANE, and a topic that is more prominent now more than ever. Over the last few years, the business has made ambitious targets with regards to reducing plastic consumption and they are well on track to achieve them. By 2025, they aim for 100% of their bottles to be made from 100% recycled PET plastic.

They are passionate about the reduction of single use plastic and urge customers to reduce their plastic purchases by switching to the more sustainable, refillable options that are available which launched in 2008.

As part of the next step in their eco-conscious journey, L’OCCITANE is excited to announce the relaunch of three of their best-selling eco-refills now housed in a 100% recyclable bottle.*

L’OCCITANE’s refill initiative began back in 1976 when the brand was founded. Olivier Baussan sold his products at markets around Provence and encouraged customers to bring back the glass bottles to be used again; or recycle them at a local glass factory in Nice. Due to the scale of the business and customer complaints about the glass bottles being impractical in bathrooms, L’OCCITANE transitioned to plastic bottles. Today L’OCCITANE encourages customers to refill these bottles where possible. The current L’OCCITANE refill pouches were launched in 2008 and are available in 15 different product lines. The primary benefit of eco-refills is that they use up to an incredible 98% less packaging in comparison to the original containers. This represents a saving of 121 tonnes of plastic in 2018!

“Our multifaceted approach is key to helping us tackle pollution caused by waste, since there is no single miracle cure to the problem. We have put a particular focus on reducing waste, by trying to eliminate unnecessary or single-use packaging. Where packaging is still needed, we will continue to promote a circular economy, using recycled and recyclable materials.”

David Bayard – Packaging R&D Director at L’OCCITANE
