Madeleine McCann disappeared 11 years ago, and heartbreakingly the police are yet to uncover what happened to the little girl on the night of May 3, 2007.

In a recent interview, Madeleine's father, Gerry emotionally detailed the painful memories he has from that fateful night.

It's every parent's worst nightmare, and Gerry described the "horror" and "disbelief" when he realised the three-year-old wasn't in their holiday apartment.

He confessed that he doesn't often think of those gut wrecking moments as they are too painful to remember.

Upon realising that his daughter could have been abducted, Gerry recounted his "almost feral reaction."

“Kate was screaming, ‘Madeleine’s missing, she’s gone’. And I was like she can’t be gone…. and (I remember) running in and checking the bedroom but obviously, she wasn’t there,” he told BBC Radio Four.

In a fanatic search for his eldest child, he opened up about how they left nothing unturned in an attempt to find Madeleine, they even searched under the kitchen sink and in cupboards.

“It was disbelief that she said Madeleine was missing,” he said.

“Disbelief, shock, horror and then panic and terror. Because I could only think of one scenario at that time…I was sure she’d been abducted,” Gerry added.

According to Gerry, the family reported her disappearance very quickly, but the sense of “overwhelming feeling of helplessness," soon hit them.

“I remember being in the bedroom, distraught. The two of us being completely distraught,” he said.

“I couldn’t get the darkest thoughts out of my mind, that somebody had taken her and abused her.

“I remember being slumped on the floor and starting to call some of my family members and just saying: ‘Pray for her’.”

The Portuguese inquiry failed to reach any conclusion about her disappearance in the Algarve, and Scotland Yard has been heading the investigation since 2013.

According to reports, the case has cost over £11 million so far.

As for her parents, Kate and Gerry have previously said they will never give up hope of finding Madeleine.
