Living in an apartment, while it has many benefits, has one particular downside - a lack of outdoor space. If you are lucky to have a balcony, with a little bit of thought and effort you can turn it into an impressive and enviable outdoor space.

Here are five ways to decorate your balcony:

Fairy lights
Give the space a bit of warmth and character by draping fairy lights along the railings or even over the door. If you have plants and pots, run the wire between them and have the scale the wall.

Colourful plants
Just because it is winter doesn’t mean you can’t decorate your balcony with potted plants – there are a number of colourful flowers you can choose from. Alternatively, use brightly coloured pots and fill them with green plants.

Comfortable chairs
One of the nicest things about apartments, especially if you live on the ground floor, is that the balcony above will keep the rain off yours. With this in mind, invest in a few chairs – you don’t need to spend a fortune - and put them outside.

Lanterns
Pick up a couple of lanterns and fill them with tea lights. This is a great and inexpensive way to add a little warmth and light to your space.

Fake grass
If you really want to make an impact, invest in some fake grass and roll it out onto your balcony. This will help to define the outdoor space from the indoor space making both seem a lot bigger.
