While most of us would choose a non-stop, direct flight over a stopover any day, sometimes there is just no getting away from it.

If you are going long haul this summer and have a gap of three hours or more between flights, the following tips should help you out:

1. Bring chargers in your carry-on bag

Your phone or iPad will become your saviour so make sure you bring your charger in your carry-on bag. The last thing you want when you have a few kids to keep occupied is for the battery to run out.

2. Get food

Don’t forget to bring money in your handbag so that you can buy the kids some food. Let them choose the restaurant and while away an hour or two there.

3. Bring blankets

Some kids can find it difficult to sleep on a plane and will relish a nap once you land, so bring plenty of blankets to keep them warm and cosy. If you have room, put an inflatable pillow in your carry on so that they can really get comfy.

4. Pack activities

Pack a special carry-on case with books, toys, colours, paper and arts and crafts. Don’t let your child see it until you land so that they will be able to get excited about opening it.

5. Find out what’s on near the airport

If you have enough time, head out of the airport and enjoy a breath of fresh air. To make the most of your time, plan ahead, check out public transport and find out what’s nearby. However, if you only have a short amount of time, don’t risk it as you will have to go back through security and you don’t want to miss your flight.
