Simple style tips that can make life easier for busy mums
As rewarding and fulfilling as motherhood can be, we must admit it’s not always sunshine and rainbows. Truth be told, being a mum is not easy at all. Whether you’re a work-at-home mum or a working mum, you know how difficult it can be to take care of all your kids’ needs, give them the love and attention they require, stay on top of daily tasks and still find the time to think about clothes or make an effort to look presentable.

Motherhood is, without a doubt, a balancing act that requires women to juggle multiple responsibilities and constantly switch between different roles. With so many things to do and so little time on your hands, it’s no wonder fashion and style often get put on the back burner. However, just because you’re a busy mum doesn’t mean you’re doomed to run around in your old sweatpants and t-shirt all day. While there’s nothing wrong with having a mum uniform – which can, in fact, make life so much easier – and no woman should be shamed for not dressing up, you can still look stylish and preppy if you want to.

So, if you’re interested in upgrading your fashion game without spending tons of time (or money) choosing clothes and fashion accessories, here are a few tips that you might find useful.

Start with the basics

As a busy mum, you probably have no desire to overcomplicate your life with fancy outfits – unless that’s your cup of the and you have the time, budget and willingness to put in the effort. If you want to look good without putting too much thought into it, you need to invest in basic clothing pieces that can provide a quick and effortless solution for every occasion.

Some classic jeans, simple tops and a selection of joggers and jumpers are the basic items that can serve as the foundation of your wardrobe. You can mix and match these pieces with ease and create numerous outfit combinations, so you can look great and get ready in no time.

Plan your OOTD

Planning your outfits can save you a lot of stress and trouble. You don’t need to list every clothing item or accessory that you intend to wear the next day, but it helps to have a rough idea of what you’re going to put on in advance. A few minutes of planning in the evening can make life easier in the morning.

This will help you avoid unfortunate scenarios where you fumble around desperately looking for your clothes five minutes before leaving the house, only to find out you’ve thrown them into the laundry basket.

Invest in quality fabrics

For a lot of women, shopping for clothes counts as therapy. When you’re a busy mum, spending a couple of hours in stores can feel like the ultimate luxury, so allow yourself to enjoy this kind of experience every once in a while. However, when you’re in your shopping bubble looking for cute outfits to flaunt your figure, make sure you prioritize quality over quantity and opt for clothes that are both beautiful and sturdy.

For example, pieces made of Ankara fabric can be a great addition to your wardrobe, as they combine stunning patterns with superior-quality materials. So, if you’re going to splurge on new clothes, at least try to invest in staple pieces that will stand the test of time.

Choose comfortable shoes

High heels can make you look and feel like a million bucks, but they’re not exactly the type of shoes you want to wear when you have a busy day ahead of you. This doesn’t mean you should only buy sneakers, loafers or espadrilles, but it’s best to keep high heels for a special occasion when you don’t need to run around town with errands.

For everyday use, we recommend wearing a pair of sturdy and comfortable shoes that pair well with all your outfits and can withstand intense wear and tear, as they’ll probably be subjected to all kinds of tests.

Layer up

When you’re too tired to create an elaborate look – which for most mums is almost every day – and you know you have to tackle multiple chores, you need an outfit that can provide some peace of mind to get you through the day. Layers can provide the solution to all your fashion dilemmas.

Whether we’re talking tanks, sweats, knits and jackets, having some versatile pieces in your wardrobe that you can mix and match and layer up effortlessly can be a real lifesaver. This will ensure you remain comfortable no matter the situation or the weather.

Add accessories

Accessories are the salt and pepper of an outfit, as they can elevate even the simplest of looks and add a bit of character and style to your fits. For example, African head wraps can spice up a plain and boring outfit instantly. Apart from that, their versatility allows you to wear them in many different styles, so you can create many different looks with just a simple headpiece.

So, if you don’t have the time or desire to dress up, accessorizing can provide a quick and effective solution to enhance your style. Simple add-ons like scarves, glasses or jewellery can make a world of a difference and help you adapt your outfits for different occasions.

Opt for minimal makeup

When it comes to makeup, the less is more approach is often the smartest choice. Since you probably don’t have enough time to put on a full face of makeup, but you don’t want to go out and face the world with a bare face either, throwing on a little bit of makeup could help you feel more confident. A BB cream, blush and some lipstick is usually enough to give you a natural and fresh look. Also, apply sunscreen as the final step in your skincare routine, and then you’re good to go.
