Considering it is in the home, many of us assume that our pet birds will be ok throughout the winter months.

However, draughts, chimneys and changing temperatures can all be detrimental to the health of your pet, and there are a few things you should do to keep them safe.

1. Maintain a constant room temperature

Dry air can cause dryness of mucus membranes in birds so try to keep humidity at bay and damp out.

2. Keep their drinking water warm

If your pet is located beside a window their water may end up being too cold to drink. Make sure you give them lukewarm water as they can struggle to drink it if it’s too cold.

3. Place them in a draught-free spot

But make sure they aren’t placed too close to a heater.

4. Don’t light a fire in the same room as them

Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems and can be overwhelmed by the fumes generated from the fire fumes.

5. Mist them regularly

Mist your bird with a spray bottle of water regularly to help replace the moisture lost through humidity. It will also help to ensure their lungs stay healthy.
