Dog owners know that going on holidays can be a little tricky, particularly if they want to take their beloved pet along with them.

And while it is possible to take your dog away, it is important you take note of the following information:

1. You must meet all entry requirements for the country you are planning on visiting. This includes vaccinations, microchipping and treatments - check with the country you are visiting to ensure you have everything you need.

2. Ask your vet for a pet passport if you plan on travelling and, remember, it will stay valid as long as you meet entry requirements. And you won’t need to get a new passport until all treatment spaces are full.

3. You must also declare that you aren’t selling or transferring ownership of the dog while you are abroad.

4. Your pet must have been treated against tapeworm not more than five days or less than one prior to returning to the country.

5. If you are returning to the UK your pet must have a microchip, a rabies vaccination, a pet passport or official veterinary cert. and tapeworm treatment.

6. If you pet does not meet the requirements, it can be sent to quarantine or sent back to the country it came from. Your animal will be in quarantine until it meets all the requirements.

Rules for travelling between countries travel regularly so keep an eye on the GOV.UK website.
