Only 30 kilometres north of Paris, Parc Astérix is a giant theme park based on the adventures of the popular Gaulish comic book characters, Astérix and Obélix.

The park is the perfect place to spend a great family day out - without having to tackle the crowds and queues found at Disneyland Paris.

Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your trip to Parc Astérix.

1. Getting there
If you're taking the car, Parc Asterix has an exit on the A1 motorway, 30 km north of Paris. If you’re leaving the car at home, the best way to get there is by bus, which leaves Charles de Gaulle airport bus station every 30 minutes - 9.30 am to 1.30pm, returning from 4.30pm until 30 minutes after the park closure at 6pm. Tickets can be bought at the bus stands on the day.

2. Where to stay
If you’re planning on an early start to beat the crowds, or don’t fancy the journey back after your trip, there are a couple of good hotel options near the park. The Hotel des Trois Hiboux is right at the entrance of Parc Asterix. As a cheaper alternative, stop at the Campanile hotel in Senlis, a lovely medieval town north of Parc Asterix and right at the exit of the A1 motorway.

3. The best day to visit
If possible, come during the week and avoid the holiday crowds. If you can only come at weekends, Saturday is the best day to go as there's likely to be more live shows and characters to cuddle.

4. Can you picnic at the park?
There are picnic areas inside the park, but you can leave the grounds to have lunch in shaded areas outside the park near the coach parks. Just remember to get a stamp on your way out so you can get back after lunch.

5. Height restrictions
Out of 32 attractions, only eight have height restrictions of over 1m 20 or 1m 40. 10 others are restricted to those over 1m. Children under 1m must be accompanied by an adult. Check the height restrictions online so your little one isn’t disappointed after queuing for a ride.

6. Arrive early
While Parc Asterix may not have the same crowds as Disneyland, it does fill up pretty quickly, especially over the holidays. Get there before the park opens at 10am to beat the queues and make the most of you day. There is an area just outside the park to have tea and a quick breakfast if you want to get there extra early during busy times.

7. Check for offers
Checking the Parc Asterix website for offers while planning your trip is definitely worth your while. Package deals such as a ticket to the park and a night's stay in a nearby hotel stay for €66, will save you money, and time looking for somewhere to stay.

8. Book online
If you’re booking tickets online, they must be made seven days in advance. Tickets do sell out pretty quickly around holiday times, so it’s a good idea to buy your tickets as soon as you decide on a visit to Parc Asterix.

9. Get the app
The free Parc Asterix app will give you all the information you need for your trip, including offers, weather updates and how big a crowd to expect during your visit.
