For most people a love of animals doesn’t just extend to their family pet (although it does for some!), and it can be quite upsetting if you see an injured wild animal on the side of the road, in your garden or even in your local park.

If you do want to help it, but aren’t sure how, take note of the following:

1. Make sure they actually need rescuing; look out for an injury, they are in immediate danger or are weak and shivering.

2. If possible, wear gloves when handling them in case of disease or infection.

3. Keep the animal away from your body, particularly your face.

4. Line a cardboard box with newspaper and place the animal inside, ensuring there are ventilation holes.

5. Never lift them unless you are CERTAIN you aren’t putting yourself in danger.

6. Do not offer the animal food or water.

7. Contact your local vet or animal shelter.

8. Don’t attempt to raise them yourself or to bring them into your home.
