It was with heavy hearts that parents Maria and George announced the passing of their one-year-old daughter Olivia Stanca yesterday.

The heartbroken couple, who had pleaded with a judge to keep their daughter on life support following Great Ormond Street's request to withdraw artificial assistance, have said goodbye to their little girl.

Olivia, who turned one on Monday, was born with a tumour on her adrenal gland in 2014. After two rounds of chemotherapy, the infant suffered several blood infections and multiple organ failure.

Great Ormond Street hospital requested that treatment be withdrawn from Olivia, as medical professionals did not feel it was in her best interests to continue with treatment, and obtained a court order last Friday which allowed staff not to resuscitate Olivia if she went into cardiac arrest.

Olivia's parents refused to give up hope that their daughter could recover and planned to oppose the hospital's application, saying: "Olivia is a little fighter and, while we appreciate she is not well, we just want to give her the best possible chance of survival with adequate treatment, nutrition and time and believe that with more time she will recover."

However, Olivia's devastated parents learned that their daughter had experienced a dramatic deterioration on Wednesday and agreed to withdraw support, with spokesperson for the trust, Fiona Paterson, telling the court that the couple now accepted that "an end-of-life plan is necessary'.

Paying tribute to their daughter on social media, the coupe wrote: "With the greatest sadness and broken hearts we have to tell you that our baby girl Olivia became an angel this evening. Thank you so much for your support."

Commenting on the tragic situation, Anne-Marie Irwin, the solicitor representing the family said: "There are no winners in this situation. The courts are charged with making very tough decisions where there are disputes between parents and clinicians over serious life or death medical issues- although events overtook the need for the court to make a decision in this case."

Our hearts go out to Olivia's family at this devastating time.
