The world was delighted when news emerged that Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively had welcomed a baby in 2014, but some were left a little perplexed when it was revealed they had called their daughter James.

But there is a very sweet reason why they chose that particular moniker.

When asked by Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway on Good Morning Britain why they gave their daughter a name normally associated with boys, the actor responded by saying they named her after his late dad.

The 39-year-old’s father passed away last year after suffering from Parkinson’s disease for 20 years.

Speaking honestly about the name, he added: “In the spectrum of weird celebrity baby names, I feel like we're not really breaking any new ground here. It's not like Summer Squash Meadow Lark, or something. I also thought of all the letters being silent in her name, so it would be just be haaaa.”

However, the couple aren’t the first to choose James as a first name for a girl; Canadian actor Brendan Fehr, who appeared in the hit TV show Roswell, and his wife Jennifer Rowley named their little girl James in 2008.
