The MMR vaccine is a vaccination that protects your child against three common childhood diseases: mumps, measles and rubella (or German measles).

Although these diseases may not seem serious, they can have severe, or even fatal complications, and it’s important that your children receive their MMR vaccinations to protect them.

The MMR vaccine does use live viruses, albeit in a weakened state, so it’s not recommended for children with weakened immunes systems, such as those with HIV or certain forms of cancer, but all other children should receive the vaccination as per the vaccination schedule.

The MMR vaccination is given several times during childhood, and although it does not protect everyone from the three diseases it vaccinates against, it will prevent the vast majority from contracting mumps, measles or German measles. Some children will experience mild side effects from the vaccine, but again, the benefits of having your child vaccinated far outweigh the risks.
